Why would I want grid-tied solar with a Tesla Powerwall?
Grid-tied solar electric systems don’t need batteries, but during an outage, those same grid-tied systems won’t provide you any power. A Tesla Powerwall gives you rechargeable backup power, so you can keep the lights on when the grid is down.
What is the Tesla Powerwall?
The Tesla Powerwall is a 13.5 kWh rechargeable lithium-ion battery primarily used for home storage and commonly paired with solar panels. Like any other battery storage option, it captures and holds energy to provide backup power in the event of an outage. This can give you more energy independence and peace of mind.
What are the benefits of the Tesla Powerwall?
The Tesla Powerwall can handle larger loads than most other battery storage options on the market. That means you can keep more of your home powered. It’s designed for self-consumption, Time-of-Use control, and short-term backup power. The Tesla Powerwall has a user-friendly customer interface and an excellent dollar-per-kWh value.
- Solar, day and night: Most homes use a fraction of the solar energy they produce. Instead of sending it back to the grid, Powerwall stores it for later use.
- Backup power: A Powerwall helps you keep essentials like lights, Wi-Fi, and your fridge running during a power outage.
- Quiet, nearly instantaneous backup power: You won’t even notice when the Powerwall switches seamlessly to backup mode.
How does a Tesla Powerwall Battery work?
The Tesla Powerwall connects to your home’s electrical system to power your home during power outages. When paired with a solar array, the Powerwall can recharge itself during an extended outage.
The Powerwall can also be used in “Self-Consumption” mode, storing power from your solar array during the day and using battery power at night—never drawing energy from the grid. Under Maine’s current electric rate structure there is no financial benefit to using a Powerwall in Self Consumption Mode
Can I install a Tesla Powerwall if I already have solar?
In most cases, yes. A Powerwall can be added to most existing home solar systems. Your inverter and layout will determine the size and design of the right battery for your equipment. Contact us, and we’ll review your setup to figure out what’s possible.
Can I install a Powerwall if I don’t have solar?
You can, but it may not be worth it in Maine. Unlike areas with high variation in on-peak and off-peak rates (like California), it’s not as financially rewarding here.
Without solar panels, the Powerwall won’t recharge during an extended outage—and it can’t charge from a generator. The best solution is to pair battery backup with solar. Although this does add a cost to the system’s price, batteries are eligible for the 30% Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit.
Who can install Tesla Powerwalls?
Only a Certified Tesla Powerwall Installer, as there are strict quality, permitting, and inspection requirements.
Are there Tesla Powerwall alternatives?
Yes. Our team continuously evaluates the best technology to offer the most reliable and cost-effective energy storage solutions. We offer several alternative battery options tailored to your needs, including the SolarEdge Home Battery System. Our consultants will help you explore the best option for your setup.
